About
Professor Maggio is a sociologist and criminologist with a focus on race and immigration. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Program at 猛男情报局 as well as the Program Director for the M.S. Program in Criminal Justice. His primary research interests are around race and immigration using quantitative methods.
Professor Maggio has extensive teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught courses such as research methods and statistics for criminology and sociology and various courses related to immigration law, policy, theory, and demography. This semester he is teaching graduate-level courses on the application of management and organizational theories in the criminal justice realm, as well as program evaluation for criminal justice.
Professor Maggio has several major research projects currently in progress. The first, in collaboration with Professor Sarah Iverson, exploits globally representative data to gain a better understanding of the barriers to migration for those who aspire to migrate, with resources and human capital proving crucial. Relatedly, he and Professor Iverson also explore the drivers of migration aspirations in lower income countries, which vary greatly by conditions of health and violence. They are also in the process of writing a book on cable news coverage of the U.S.-Mexico border from 2010-2024, highlighting the role of President Trump in altering this coverage both quantitatively and qualitatively, and the impact this may have had on public opinion toward immigration. Lastly, along with Meaghan Tomasiewicz, Professor Maggio is analyzing data on racial disparities in student visa rejections in the U.S., finding evidence of discrimination against applicants from predominantly Black and Muslim nations in particular.
